From chanson to musical: wonderful evergreens, chansons and poems by the brilliant Berlin poet Robert Gilbert

From chanson to musical: wonderful evergreens, chansons & poems. An encounter with the brilliant Berlin poet Robert Gilbert - with "Chanson-Nette" Jeannette Urzendowsky, Henry Nandzik and the Ukrainian-Russian trio Scho. Gennady Desatnik on violin and guitar; Valeriy Khoryshman on accordion; Alexander Franz on double bass. Directed by Isabelle Gensior.

Everyone knows his hits, but hardly anyone knows him: the Berlin chanson and cabaret poet Robert Gilbert (1899-1978).
“A friend, a good friend”, “It's so young when Spain's blossoms bloom”, “Oh my papa”, “That's only once, it'll never come again”, “Stempellied, song of the unemployed”, “Through Berlin the Spree is still flowing” – to this day his chansons and rhymes carry the sound of Berlin of the 20s, early 30s and post-war years out into the world.
Robert Gilbert wrote texts with inexhaustible wit, with depth and cabaret tips against inhuman stupidity. He worked closely with the composer Werner Richard Heymann, but also with Ralph Benatzky, Hanns Eisler, Hermann Leopoldi and Robert Stolz.
"I would have danced tonight" is also a musical-cabaret evening against forgetting.
Why? The success of chansons and cabaret in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s would be unthinkable without Gilbert and many other artists with Jewish roots. But from 1933 they were persecuted, the genre of the chanson, the "intelligent song", was destroyed. We would like to remind you of that. "Chanson-Nette" Jeannette Urzendowsky is honorary ambassador of the German Cabaret Archive.
Robert Gilbert remained true to the Berlin dialect even in exile and was a pointed observer of his time: "It's important to complain, anyone can be nice".

Potsdam's floating stage is a very special cultural experience! Cabaret & music in the former hold of a Mark Brandenburg inland freighter, built in 1924, 52 meters long, a good six meters wide - and now protected as a technical monument. “Sturmvogel” is the name of the Potsdam theater ship, which is open all year round and hosts up to 300 performances a year. At the beginning of the 1990s, it was converted into a theater that can seat up to 90 guests. But that's not all: here you can enjoy culture and art, have fun in the ship's pub and enjoy the flair of the cultural and natural scenery close to the water. The bar is open before and after the performances. In summer you can order drinks on the upper deck. Cheers! You can look far across the deep lake to Babelsberg Palace Park, an enchanting panorama. Ahoy & have fun on Potsdam's floating stage! Link: www.theaterschiff-potsdam.de
