On the free Museum Sunday on 6 October 2024, Thanksgiving Sunday, the residents of the Kulturforum will open their doors to the city from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and present an extensive programme for all generations.

This year's theme is ‘Harvest Festival at the Kulturforum’, and the participating institutions include the Gemäldegalerie, Kupferstichkabinett, Kunstbibliothek, Kunstgewerbemuseum, Neue Nationalgalerie, the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung with the Musikinstrumenten-Museum, the Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, the Stiftung St. Matthäus and the Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung Berlin.

From 10 a.m. onwards, all the buildings will be open to the public, and there will be dancing, baking, painting, performing, making music and crafting inside and outside – and of course eating!

  • There will be interactive street art in front of the entrance areas of the museums and the state library, including salsa, African tango, stilt theatre and a scooter disco, as well as food and drinks from all over the world.
  • On Matthäikirchplatz, Marisa Benjamim is setting up an edible art installation inspired by plein air painting.
  • At 4 p.m., singer Malonda will perform on the south side of the National Gallery to mark the naming of the Josephine Baker Garden.
  • The Feuerundflamme alliance will host a performative baking session from 12 noon to 5 p.m., with the results being served afterwards at the large outdoor table under the trees of the tree nursery on Scharounplatz.

Harvest festival – the Kulturforum invites you to a table in the open air

As part of a further collaboration, donations will be collected on site for the ‘Berliner Tafel’ (Berlin food bank) in order to also set an example of community spirit during the harvest festival.
At the centre: Berlin's longest table for the city under the trees of the Kulturforum tree nursery on Scharounplatz – with culinary surprises.

At 5 p.m., the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, Claudia Roth, and the Senator for Culture, Dr. Thomas Flierl, will open the communal dinner under the open sky. Afterwards, the jazz and classical violinist Sandro Roy and his Unity Trio will play at the table.
The day will draw to a close at 6 p.m. with a harvest festival service between the fruit trees of the Kulturforum tree nursery, with General Superintendent Ulrike Trautwein, Pastor Hannes Langbein and the Bensmann Saxophon Quartett.

If you are lucky at the raffle, you can still attend the concert with Paavo Järvi and the Berlin Philharmonic at 7 p.m. The programme includes works by Veljo Tormis, Dmitri Shostakovich and Anton Bruckner.
  • Ten pairs of free tickets for the concert will be raffled off at 6 p.m.

The programme in the individual museums is also wide-ranging:

  • Those interested in the history of the place can discover the historic Tiergarten district on a tour with experts from the Art Library.
  • The Gemäldegalerie offers special tours on topics such as ‘In Hülle und Fülle’ (in abundance) and ‘Wachsen und Gedeihen’ (growing and flourishing), and members of their circle of friends present their favourite works under the motto ‘Bereichernde Freundschaft’ (enriching friendship).
  • The Freundeskreis des Kunstgewerbemuseums (Friends of the Museum of Decorative Arts) will be presenting the new acquisitions of recent years in short tours, while the Kupferstichkabinett invites visitors to experience the autumnal moods of the ‘other’ Impressionism.
  • At the Neue Nationalgalerie, there is a last opportunity to visit the special exhibition ‘Andy Warhol. Velvet Rage and Beauty’.
  • Numerous tours throughout the day will also give you the opportunity to learn more about the connections between nature and the art of the Neue Nationalgalerie.
  • At the Staatsbibliothek, the project Displayed Words brings literature and poetry into public spaces, with Logan February reading her own works and Otis Mensah performing.
  • The WZB presents the fruits of research, often spanning many years, in harvest festival tours of the building on the Landwehrkanal.

There is also a special programme for children and families.
