About an officer, a traveler, a convicted man and a court case. About a peculiar machine. It tortures, murders and writes the verdict into the skin with fine needles. Artful. Deadly. Fascinating and repulsive at the same time.

When Kafka wrote the text in 1914, he could only have guessed that he was on the verge of a devastating war and at the beginning of the bloodiest century in history. Looking back, however, it reads almost as a prediction of these previously unimaginable horrors.

Kafka's language creates images that we cannot escape. Images that confront us with dreams, fears and desires. You shiver as you feel how close civilization and barbarism are to one another. How small the step can be to become a beast, from perpetrator to victim and victim to perpetrator.

With Uli Pleßmann (acting) & Max Doehlemann (piano)
