For the special exhibition "Frans Hals. Master of the Moment" (12.07. to 03.11.2024)

Frans Hals had a mind of his own: when the clients of a large shooting piece wanted to summon him to Amsterdam, he declined. He invented new motifs and established a breathtakingly free painting style as his trademark.

With his life-size genre figures, Frans Hals helped society's outsiders gain previously unknown visibility. Only modern painters could match the bold style of his late portraits.

Dagmar Hirschfelder, director of the Gemäldegalerie and specialist in Dutch painting of the 17th century, introduces the genius and rebellious facets of the Dutchman.
