Six thematic tours
“Women” forms the second section of the series “The Second Look” and was realized in collaboration with the Frauentreff Olga, a contact and advice center for women, trans women and sex workers in the Kurfürstenstrasse area who are affected by drug use.
The focus is on representations of women's gender and social roles, be it as goddesses, heroines, prostitutes, saints, queens, academics, and much more.
In six thematic tours with 62 objects from the 4th to the 18th century, the figures and their actions are placed in their respective contemporary context. A socially critical 21st century perspective is used to stimulate discussion.
To this day, art historiography is characterized by a male perspective, which also defines the art historical canon. Women's contributions and stories have long been neglected in Western museums. The invisibility of these aspects still connects almost all museums with collections of the so-called "Old Masters".
The second Glance: women
The Second Glance is a new exhibition series that provides a multi-perspectival engagement with the permanent collection of the Bode Museum through themes of contemporary social relevance. Following thematic paths, visitors will be encouraged to discover the treasures of the Sculpture Collection and the Museum for Byzantine Art in new and different ways.
"The Second Glance: Women" is curated by María López-Fanjul y Díez del Corral and funded by the Friede Springer Foundation and Museum & Location.
