in 1932, the German-American writer Klaus Mann undertook an extended trip to Finland, the impressions of which were incorporated into his first novel written in exile, "Escape to the North".

Finnish-born director Ingemo Engström adapted the work into a film in 1985, following the melancholy mood of the novel and telling the story of young Johanna's (Katharina Thalbach) escape from the Nazi regime.

The film captures the agonizing atmosphere and desperation of the exiles. The confinement of the protagonists, who find no peace on the run. In strictly composed and cool tableaux, 'Escape to the North' shows the longing for home and the fragility of human existence in exile.
