Potsdam's newly opened attraction, the rebuilt tower of the Garrison Church, is hosting an exhibition on the history of the site. The exhibition ‘Faith, Power and the Military’ provides a critical examination of the history of the Garrison Church in the context of German and European history.
Unique exhibits, impressive images, informative documents and in-depth multimedia stations sensitise visitors to the threats to democracies. Human behaviour is reflected upon and the shaping of a pluralistic society is encouraged.
The history of the Garrison Church goes back almost 300 years. Built between 1730 and 1735 under Frederick William I as a court and garrison church, it was badly destroyed during the air raid on Potsdam in 1945.
In 1950, the Chapel of the Holy Cross was consecrated in the tower as a place of peace. In 1968, the walls of the nave and the tower were blown up at the behest of the SED regime.
Since 2017, the Garrison Church Foundation has been rebuilding the church - almost exactly as it was originally.
The barrier-free tower of the Garrison Church offers an unobstructed view of Potsdam's most important sights from its viewing platform.
Admission to the exhibition is included in the visit to the tower.
