From 21 September to 19 October 2024, Emerging Change presents an energetic selection of performances, workshops, residency showings, community conversations and celebrations with renowned and emerging international and Berlin-based artists.


Curators Nara Virgens and Makisig Akin, in collaboration with art and social-justice organisations from across Berlin, are creating a space for QTBIPoC to unfold, network and support each other in order to challenge tokenism and structural racism in the field.

All events are open to the public and either free of charge or accessible according to a tiered pricing model.

Mission:

The Emerging Change Dance Festival fosters artistic collaboration, provides non-hierarchical artistic mentorship, supports community exchange, and promotes a caring-based working culture for and with Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (QTBIPoC) dance artists and their allies.

At the centre of this is a value system of accessibility and sustainability for all participants. In concrete terms, this means that the Emerging Change Dance Festival:

curates and brings together excellent local and international QTBIPoC dance artists supports strong artist-to-artist connections and mentoring provides an intensive exchange between artists and audiences to develop the community practices a working culture based on caring that emphasises health, accessibility, wellbeing and sustainability for all involved
sustainability for all involved develops systems of accountability and care.

Venues:

The events will take place at five locations across Berlin: Radialsystem, Uferstudios GmbH, Tanzfabrik Berlin e.V., Casa Kuà and GLADT e.V.

Project description:

Emerging Change is designed to create space for community and sustainability. The festival unfolds gradually over the course of five weeks with performances, workshops, residencies, community talks and a celebration.

A highlight of the Emerging Change dance festival is the captivating solo performance by renowned New York dance artist:in mayfield brooks with live cello. ‘Whale Fall: abyss’ emerges from the sonic dissidence of black grief and dissolves into a dance that becomes a space of mourning and regeneration, lamentation, ecstasy, song and sonic liberation.
