The permanent exhibition at the ZiLLEMUSEUM

The ZiLLEMUSEUM is located in the arcades of Propststraße, in the middle of the historic Nikolaiviertel. It commemorates the life and work of the painter, illustrator and photographer Heinrich Zille (1859-1929), the 80th honorary citizen of Berlin.

Zille, often referred to as ‘Pinselheinrich’ – a nickname that was sometimes affectionate, sometimes critical – depicted the everyday life and hardships of the ordinary people of Berlin. With powerful images, photos and drawings, he held a mirror up to society and criticised the Wilhelminian Zeitgeist, whose rapid industrialisation and urbanisation led to social impoverishment and ultimately resulted in two world wars.

The permanent exhibition ‘Life and Work’ presents original drawings, sketches and lithographs, as well as Zille's rare photographs. In the cinema room, the film ‘Det war Zille sein Milljöh’ by Irmgard von zur Mühlen shows excerpts from Zille's eventful life and surroundings.
