Camille Corot, Camille Pissarro, Francis Seymour Haden, James Tissot, Lesser Ury and many others have chosen trees as their motif. They show them providing pleasant shade on hot summer days or whipped by rain and storms in violent thunderstorms.
In 1858, Camille Corot created a cliché verre entitled "Memory of Bas Bréau". This area was one of several nature reserves near Barbizon that artists and foresters of the time had campaigned for.
At that time, they actually succeeded in preventing the planned destruction of large heath areas by planting pine trees that could be used more economically and instead persuaded Emperor Napoleon III to designate protected areas for a primeval forest.
The exhibition "The Other Impressionism" (September 25, 2024 - January 12, 2025) in the Kupferstichkabinett is about prints by the Impressionists. The tour will focus on the topic of trees.
