Free themed tour in German on World Philosophy Day | Despite the utopias of Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Immanuel Kant of an ideal society in which reason, equality and justice prevail, the Enlightenment has not fully realised its claim to create a world guided by reason for all people. Nevertheless, the ideas of the Enlightenment have shaped notions of individual freedom, political equality and social justice.
Together with the education officers, selected exhibits are used to explore the philosophical and historical foundations of the Enlightenment in the 18th century, which significantly influenced the fight for freedom and human rights from France and the USA to Haiti.
The dialogue-based tour brings together well-known thinkers and new global voices, such as Phillis Wheatley, from marginalised groups of the 18th century, ‘into conversation’ with each other.
