Nothing is the same anymore. French anthropologist and author Nastassja Martin encounters a bear on a research trip to the Kamchatka Peninsula. A fight ensues. Both survive, seriously injured. She finds herself in a state of damaged identity. When she recovers, she returns to the wilderness to process the event through exploration of the local Even culture.
The author is not a nature mystic, but a poetic scientist. Her reflections lead her to the edges of existence, to transitional zones and in-between worlds. Nastassja Martin strives to believe in the wild without glorifying it. In this way, she creates a text that is both emotional and rational, unsparing, and linguistically brilliant, and that resonates long after the reader has left.
