With Thomas Köhler, Director Berlinische Galerie

Kader Attia (*1970 in Dugny) grew up in France and Algeria. He gained international recognition for his contributions to the Venice Biennale 2003/2017 and dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012, among others. As curator, he was responsible for the 12th Berlin Biennale 2022.

At the Berlinische Galerie, he is showing the two work complexes "J'accuse" (2016) and "The Object's Interlacing" (2020). "J'accuse" comprises an excerpt from Abel Gance's anti-war film of the same name from 1938 as well as 18 busts. They show so-called "gueules cassées", soldiers from the First World War with severe facial injuries. Attia thus continues his exploration of the concept of "repair", which has been at the heart of his work for many years.

In "The Object's Interlacing" (2020), Attia talks to various experts about the restitution of looted cultural objects from the colonial era. Without apportioning blame, he develops an understanding of restitution from various contemporary perspectives - philosophical, legal, anthropological, psychoanalytical, museological and economic - as a practice of repair that goes far beyond the mere return of looted objects to their place of origin. The two works by Attia are complemented by selected collages by Hannah Höch from her iconic series "From an Ethnographic Museum" (1924-1934).
