Stories and objects

For the first time, Domäne Dahlem presents an exhibition entirely dedicated to its own collection after more than40 years of museum history: SAMMLUNG DOMÄNE DAHLEM. Stories and Objects shows from 07.07.2023 to 04.08.2024 the diversity of contents and objects stored in the depot of the open-air museum for agricultural and food culture with an ecological focus.

The exhibition also takes up this breadth in terms of content and asks questions that look at how we deal with our nature over time: How has agriculture changed? What does sustainable consumption mean? What has happened on the domain's fields over the course of time? What view did artists have on the subject of agriculture? What view do we ourselves have of agriculture? The exhibition connects the objects with ecological themes of our time and tells of the open-air museum's own collection history.

On display are 200 objects from the collection in eight rooms. In addition to etchings by Käthe Kollwitz and Lesser Ury, the variety of unusual objects from agriculture, food culture and consumer history will be on display - from a spade to a historic cargo bike from the Dahlem domain to a reed sled. The objects are contextualized to contemporary issues of sustainability, responsibility, and biodiversity. The history of the Domäne Dahlem - including its many still white spots - also finds space in the exhibition. For example, there are exhibits that refer to the National Socialist era, one of the gaps in knowledge that must be further closed in the future.

But it is not only about the objects in the collection, but also about the subject of collecting in general. The interactive exhibition involves the visitors and asks them questions: What is valuable to you? Is agriculture political? And finally: What does all this have to do with you? In the collection workshop, visitors can put together their own exhibition in a screw-top jar and vote on which objects should be included in the Domäne Dahlem collection in the future.Translated with DeepL
