After being found guilty of theft, Dresden lawyer Felix Alexander Oppenheim was forced to change his profession: he became a photographer and, with his photographs of Germany, Spain, and Greece, is considered one of the pioneers of architectural photography in the 1850s.

The only known portrait of Oppenheim is by his niece Alexe Grahl. In addition to photographing her family in Dresden-Loschwitz, she also photographed flowers and Elbe landscapes, which she presented at exhibitions in the 1890s. Her works depict Dresden in the 19th century – both familiar and unfamiliar.
