Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century
After the great public success of the first stop at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the Helmut Newton Foundation, in cooperation with the Pinault Collection, is showing 250 works by outstanding photographers, including Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank and Irving Penn.

Photographs from the portrait, fashion, still life, architecture and photojournalism genres on display from François Pinault's collection range from 1910 to the late 1970s, with works from the renowned Condé Nast archive.
Arranged chronologically, they exemplify the development of fashion history and the radical social changes in the Western world.
Many of Helmut Newton's works are shown for the first time
Works by Helmut Newton are also part of this remarkable collection. Newton worked for various Condé Nast magazines in the 1950s, primarily Vogue and Vanity Fair. The majority of these Newton images will be on display for the first time at the Berlin Foundation.
In addition to Helmut Newton, the exhibition brings together a selection of other greats, including Diane Arbus, Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, John Deakin, Robert Frank, Evelyn Hofer, Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, Peter Hujar, William Klein, Lisette Model, Ugo Mulas, Irving Penn, Bert Stern, Deborah Turbeville and Chris von Wangenheim.
Photographic journey through time
“Chronorama” is a fascinating compendium of valuable vintage prints that were once used as magazine print templates. The exhibition offers a unique look at the beginnings of photographic staging, the interpretation of contemporary fashion and aspects of culture, lifestyle and world events. Arranged strictly by decade, the photographic journey through time begins in 1910, when Condé Nast Publishing took over Vogue magazine.
On the exhibition walls there are also colored illustrations from the 1910s and 1920s, former selling points for fashion magazines. From the 1950s onwards, photography became the dominant medium, with the earliest color image by Irving Penn in 1952. A visual evolution from the black and white era to colorful brilliance.
Panorama of 20th century icons
The exhibition puts people in the spotlight, with portraits of icons from 20th century music, art, sports and politics. She takes you into opulent interiors and elegant beauty salons and shows fascinating photo experiments. The visitors also look at the destroyed London and the newly built Empire State Building in New York.
Curatorial team
The exhibition is curated by Matthieu Humery, photography advisor to the Pinault Collection, and Matthias Harder, director of the Helmut Newton Foundation.
