Conversation with Joachim Dillinger about neighborhood engagement
One subway stop from the AGB, in Tempelhof's Schulenburgring, General Weidling signed the surrender of Berlin on May 2, 1945 – six days before the all-German surrender in Berlin-Karlshorst. A memorial plaque commemorates this historic event.
There are other places nearby that invite remembrance: In the neighboring building, a synagogue was evicted from its rented premises; Stolpersteine commemorate the Jewish Berliners who were deported and murdered; a plaque honors Wolfgang Szepansky, who resisted the Nazi regime; and on the nearby grounds of Tempelhof Airport, the Columbiadamm concentration camp and forced labor are commemorated.
Joachim Dillinger from the Schulenburgring 2 housing community, together with his neighbors, has been committed to a vibrant culture of remembrance for over 40 years and would like to speak with the audience about the significance of the end of the war 80 years ago for Berlin and how the future of remembrance can be shaped.
