Jak być kochaną

The well-known radio presenter Felicja flies from Warsaw to Paris at the end of the 1950s. She remembers the time of the German occupation during the Second World War.

As a young actress, she hid her colleague Wiktor, who had killed a "Volksdeutsche" in 1939, in her apartment. To ensure his survival, she acted for the Germans in a theater. After the end of the war, Felicja was sentenced as a collaborator. Wiktor turned his back on her and eventually took his own life.

The feature film Jak być kochaną by Wojciech Jerzy Has (1925-2000) is based on the story of the same name by Kazimierz Brandys (1916-2000). Has translates the inner monologues from the book into flashbacks. The film reflects a female perspective on life during the war under German occupation and the time afterwards.

At the same time, the film is a critical examination of patriotic hero myths. This psychological drama about love and betrayal is one of the masterpieces of Polish cinema and has been shown at numerous international festivals.
