Industrial walk with Björn Berghausen

Tegel's economic and industrial history is inextricably linked to the name Borsig: No other industrial settlement in what later became the Reinickendorf district may have had such a lasting influence on the city's development as the move of the locomotive construction company from A.Borsig to Tegel.

As a transport route, the Havel also promoted the establishment of additional heavy industry and the construction of what was once the largest gasworks in Europe.

The walk starts in the founding context of the Tegel industry, and then advances into the special armaments history from 1914 onwards at the production facilities of Alkett and Maget (Altmärkische Kettenwerke and Maschinen- und Gerätebau Tegel) - subsidiaries of Rheinmetall-Borsig. Part of the war economy was the use of forced labor: 30,000 forced laborers, prisoners of war and Eastern workers were deployed in Reinickendorf in 1944, 1,500 of them housed in the “Krumpuhher Weg” camp.

The history of this forced labor camp is documented almost completely and is therefore unique in Berlin. The walk ends in the accessible monument site and establishes the connections between industry and forced labor, between wartime and remembrance.

A cooperation between the Reinickendorf Museum and the Berlin-Brandenburg Economic Archives e.V.

The length of the tour is around 6 km and lasts around 3 hours.
