The chamber music concert All over Beethoven presents three key works by Ludwig van Beethoven, each reflecting a different stage in his artistic evolution and his pioneering approach to musical form and instrumental dialogue.

The Violin Sonata Op. 12 No. 1 (1797–98) continues the model of Mozart's violin sonatas, yet Beethoven deepens the interplay between violin and piano, giving both instruments equal prominence and redefining the genre beyond mere salon entertainment.

The Cello Sonata No. 4 in C major, Op. 102 No. 1, belongs to Beethoven’s late period. Characterized by bold themes, formal innovation, and dense counterpoint, this sonata initially bewildered audiences—today, it stands as a testament to Beethoven’s uncompromising creative vision.

The celebrated "Ghost Trio" in D major, Op. 70 No. 1, owes its nickname to Beethoven’s student Carl Czerny, who associated the eerie Largo with Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Sketchbook entries suggest that Beethoven was indeed engaged with Shakespearean themes during its composition, lending the piece its dramatic and haunting character.

Performers:

  • Katharina Uhde – Violin
  • Sanja Uhde – Cello
  • R. Larry Todd – Piano
