The largest mineral collection in Germany

The Museum of Natural History has the largest mineral collection in Germany. The entire collection comprises 200,000 pieces, which is more than two thirds of all known minerals. The mineralogical display collection currently shows a total of 1,077 species.

Exhibits from many countries

The foundation stone of the collection is formed by minerals and rocks from the "Royal Mineral Collection" of 1781. Some pieces come from famous expeditions, such as the gemstones that Alexander von Humboldt brought back from Russia.

Minerals - guardians of many treasures

Gold, silver and platinum are among the precious metals that have been valued since ancient times for the production of jewelry and coins and today play a central role in medicine and catalyst technology. Glass and ceramics have developed into advanced high-tech materials, while modern computer technology would be unimaginable without the key material silicon.
