Staged reading and discussion
May 8, 1945, marked the end of the Nazi regime in Germany – including in Berlin and what is now the Hohenschönhausen district. The Red Army had already occupied the Lichtenberg district in April. However, liberation also marked the transition to a new dictatorship.
In May 1945, the Soviet Army confiscated the site at Genslerstraße 66, where a large-scale kitchen of the National Socialist People's Welfare had been operating since 1939.
There, they established Special Camp No. 3. At times, over 4,200 people were imprisoned under catastrophic conditions:
Cramped conditions, inadequate supplies, a lack of medical care, and unsanitary conditions characterized daily life in the camp. According to estimates, at least 1,000 prisoners lost their lives. Their bodies were anonymously buried in mass graves in a rubble heap.
The event offers a space for discussion with experts on the Soviet invasion of Berlin, particularly in the Lichtenberg district, and on the establishment of the communist dictatorship by the Soviet Union.
The program will be complemented by a literary reading featuring testimonies from this period, offering an artistic approach to the historical events.
