Visiting Art/ist 2025

In her long-term project Dandelions, Finnish photographer Aino Väänänen documents the lives of opiate addicts in Romania. Since 2018, she has accompanied their daily lives in Romanian cities, developing an immersive, empathetic style that reflects the intensity and complexity of their lives.

Aino Väänänen builds trust by spending several days with people. She depicts a reality of chaos, the struggle for survival, and love—characterized by a genuine closeness to her subjects.

As a Berlin-based documentary photographer, she focuses on social issues such as the opioid crisis in Romania, LGBTQI+ communities in Russia and Ukraine, and environmental change in Northern Scandinavia.

In 2022, she was named Visual Artist of the Year by the Northern Photographic Centre in Oulu. Väänänen is also the editor of the independent photography zine We Shall See and teaches photography.
