Loved and hated, often visited and also avoided: Where the Humboldt Forum stands today was once the site of the Palace of the Republic. With an annual focus, the Humboldt Forum reflects on the significance of this place, the social changes since the end of the Cold War and thus also its own existence. The exhibition thematises the experiences of oppression and freedom, transformation and loss.

The Palace of the Republic: Planning - Construction - Operation - Demolition - Today

The exhibition is dedicated to the various phases of the building: from its planning and construction between 1973 and 1976, its function as a multi-purpose political and cultural building in the GDR, its importance as the seat of the first freely elected People's Chamber, its interim use and its demolition, finally completed in 2008.

A historical journey: the history and present of the palace can be experienced at this exhibition

Around 300 objects and exhibits from and about the palace, including fragments of the Glass Flower, the painting "The Red Flag" by Willi Sitte and the engine block of a Golf VI as well as numerous drawings, photographs and posters can be seen on an exhibition area of 1,300 square metres.
