Visa requirements

Information on visas and passports

Nationals of EU countries can enter Germany without a visa. They only need to be able to identify themselves, either with a valid passport or an identity card.

Non-EU citizens who stay in Germany for longer than 90 days generally require a valid passport and a valid visa to enter Germany.

There are exceptions to the visa requirement for travellers from non-EU countries who are staying in Germany for less than 90 days in a six-month period (tourist visa). Please refer to the pages of the Foreign Office.

Please note the upcoming changes to travel regulations at European level:

Information on the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and the Entry/Exit System (EES)  can be found on the pages of the European Union.

  • ESS is expected to start in October 2025
  • ETIAS in the last quarter of 2026

Tourists who want to combine their stay in Berlin with a trip to other European countries are advised to apply for the necessary visas for their stay in the desired countries before departure.

You can find all the information you need about applying for your visa on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
