Shopping around Friedrichstrasse

Shopping between Checkpoint Charlie and Friedrichstadt-Palast

One point first: shopping on Friedrichstrasse in 2025 may not be what you expected. The former large luxury malls such as Galeries Lafayette or Quartier 5 and Quartier 6 have been abandoned or are now empty.

However, it is definitely worth combining your trip to high culture, the world-famous theatres or the delicious restaurants around Friedrichstraße and Gendarmenmarkt with a shopping spree.

Some of the traditional shops with handmade products, themed department stores and luxury fashion shops are located between the sights and restaurants.

We are happy to take you on a short walk along Friedrichstrasse and to the large, beautifully renovated Gendarmenmarkt, where you can discover many a gem.

Tip: Our business recommendations are listed below. Have fun!

Start at Checkpoint Charlie

Start at the Stadtmitte underground station, very close to the world-famous Checkpoint Charlie. Right on the corner of Krausestraße, you will find a specialist for high-quality bespoke menswear:

whether you are looking for a suit or elegant knitwear, chinos or men's shoes, at Rooks & Rocks you will be inspired, advised and provided with perfect made-to-measure clothing.

A change of scene a few metres further on: the Bürgelhaus on the corner of Leipziger Straße may initially seem like a large Santa Claus manufactory - and you'd be right: you'll find a large selection of everything you know about carvings from the Ore Mountains. But you'll also find the famous original Black Forest clocks, the finest doll's house inventory and lots of wooden toys.

You know Le Creuset? The French specialist retailer for high-quality earthenware and cast iron cookware offers you a cheerful, all-encompassing range in the well-known and popular colours at Friedrichstraße 191.

A good cup of coffee and off you go

Stoneware and cast iron weigh and perhaps you've been travelling for a while. Just opposite, on the corner of Kronenstraße, you can take a comfortable seat by the beautiful windows of the traditional Einstein Kaffee and watch the hustle and bustle on Friedrichstraße.

A little further on, on the corner of Mohrenstraße, try on one of the elegant, stylish coats at Max Mara - they are the brand's speciality, but dresses and handbags from the fashion chain are also great. Right next door, Läderach, the classic chocolaterie run by Swiss family business Elias Läderach, will spoil you with delicious mini mousses, pralines or chocolate chunks.

Chocolate dreams at Gendarmenmarkt

Chocolate is one of the main themes around Friedrichstrasse, and nowhere else will you find more specialities than here. If you're more drawn to Belgium than Switzerland: A few steps further on, the traditional shop Neuhaus invites you to savour Belgian chocolate delicacies at their finest.

Now take a detour to Mohrenstraße and walk around Gendarmenmarkt with us: and that's right - right on the corner of Charlottenstraße, you can once again immerse yourself in the most delicious chocolate worlds:

The multi-storey Schokoladenhaus Rausch, a traditional house in its fifth generation, serves you the brown gold not only in solid form, but also in liquid form as drinking chocolate in many variations and brings it straight to your coffee table. You will also find imaginative gifts here - made of chocolate, of course.

To round off the list, let's go about 100 metres further: also on the corner of Französische Straße and Charlottenstraße at Gendarmenmarkt, the Bunte Schokowelt von Rittersport also presents handmade creations and a huge selection of small Rittersport gifts.

Incidentally, your children will not want to leave the shop: An eternal chocolate fountain bubbles away on the upper floor and everyone is allowed to catch the creamy-sweet, shiny chocolate flow with a small biscuit bowl...A holiday treat is the chocolate workshop, where everyone can become creative chocolate makers.

Souvenirs, fashion and Miró around the Gendarmenmarkt

You can buy typical Berlin souvenirs at the Gendarmenmarkt at Ampelmann, on the corner of Markgrafenstraße and Taubenstraße: Olga is waiting to advise you here on weekdays. The original Berlin touch of the products is combined with high quality: Berlin towels are made by Möve, the (vegan) wine gums by Haribo and the funny Berlin fountain pen is produced by Lamy. From baby clothes to umbrellas - everything in the Berlin look.

Ampelmann's large flagship store is not far from Unter den Linden, but Olga's service also makes the smaller shop on Gendarmenmarkt very attractive.

Just around the corner and on Markgrafenstraße/Französische Straße, two elegant fashion shops are located opposite each other: The fashion store by annette görtz is just as purist as her fashion - high-quality materials, timeless style and straight, architecturally inspired cuts.

The Square Berlin is reminiscent of an elegant temple and this is also the right ambience for the brands: here you will find many of the luxurious flagship stores on Kurfürstendamm in the west, from Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta to Gucci, Dior and Jil Sander.

On the corner of Charlottenstraße and Jägerstraße, the Antiquariat Berlin offers old and modern art, maps and city views of high quality. You can browse here, but you can also buy a Chagall or a Miró.

Dine deliciously and continue shopping on Friedrichstraße

Would you like to sit down for a meal? A f ew steps further along Taubenstraße, the well-known traditional Berlin restaurant Lutter & Wegner invites you to enjoy a tasty Berlin menu such as braised lamb shank in stylish, wood-panelled rooms, followed by a Black Forest parfait.

Continue south along Friedrichstraße.If you are a fan of manga, pop or animé characters, you will fulfil a dream at the corner of Friedrichstraße and Jägerstraße: The themed shop Figuya has an incredible wealth of licensed figures and statues for collectors and fans.
Now stroll on past a few well-known luxury labels such as Karl Lagerfeld, Patek Philipp or Rolex and you will discover in the middle of them, at Friedrichstraße 166,... yes what? A traditional Berlin chocolaterie, of course: Sawade has been spoiling gourmets with truffles and chocolates since 1880, and you can also get the right gift box for every occasion there.

Continue with high-quality branded clothing at the Boss Store Berlin and diagonally opposite, on the corner of Friedrichstraße and Behrenstraße, you will find the well-known labels Massimo Dutti and Cos.
The whole world of fine Berlin tableware Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin KPM opens up a few steps further towards the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden.

Here you will find the famous collections of the company founded by Frederick the Great himself: the finest porcelain, handmade in Berlin. Right next door is the KPM Outlet.

Culture shopping until midnight

When you cross Unter den Linden, you will first encounter a dense succession of clothing chains such as Esprit, Marco Polo or Zara and snack stalls.
It's worth strolling on to the corner of Friedrichstraße and Mittestraße, because here you will find Dussmann the culture department store

And you'll need time for the unique Dussmann with its five floors: browse through books and audio books, discover films and music, immerse yourself in piano sheet music and the world of games. Our personal favourites: the huge selection of cards, whether art postcards, fine motif cards or occasion cards. And of course the VinylKultur area with old and new records, from Sade to The Cure, from jazz to reggae. In the basement, you will also find Germany's largest selection of classical music with around 40,000 products.

The best thing is: your time is unlimited. Because from Monday to Friday you can stay here until midnight, on Saturdays until 11.30 pm, and enjoy a coffee in between.

Stroll on again, always heading south, past drugstores, bakeries and other chain stores, and you'll find yourself at the legendary Friedrichstraße station, where our shopping walk ends and from where you can travel in all directions.

Unless you walk a little further to the Weidendammbrücke bridge. On the right-hand side, in front of the Hotel Melia, there is a photo booth. In the booth, you can take the funniest souvenir photos together for wonderfully little money.
