© (c) visumate Van Loon Van Loon Van Loon The heart of the Kreuzberg local neighbourhood scene between “Kotti” (Kottbusser Tor) and Graefestraße may be not the first place to look for relaxing spots by the waterside. But they are there! Along the quay wall of the old Urban harbour, built in 1896 to unload coal for the residents of the working-class industrial area of Kreuzberg, the harbour area has today become a green inner-city oasis. The Van Loon (fixed restaurant ship) as well as the launches Philippa and Josephina are anchored here, whereby the latter two are also used for culinary trips on the waterways. © visitBerlin, Foto: Dagmar Schwelle Alte Liebe Alte Liebe Alte Liebe The “Alte Liebe” was for many decades the favourite spot for West Berliners for their first date. Today the ship, which is, incidentally, the only restaurant ship in Berlin on the Havel, is a cult object. Reachable by a 20 minute walk from the Olympic stadium, the Waldbühne and Pichelsberg S-Bahn (overground local railway), it is set secludedly in the forests. Dining on board feels a bit like having a short break from the metropolis. Read more Location Alte Liebe Havelchaussee 107 14055 Berlin Alte Liebe Havelchaussee 107 14055 Berlin

© visitBerlin Lindwerder island Lindwerder island Lindwerder island The small island – just two hectares (5 acres) in size – on the banks of the Havel in Grunewald forest takes its name from the lime tree (there are more than 50 of them on the island). A landowner discovered the island at the end of the 19th century and bought it. Lindwerder rapidly developed into a popular sport for day trips. Even today there is still a famous weekend restaurant – together with a yacht club – on the island. To reach the island from Grunewald you have to call over a small ferry with a bell while standing on the jetty. The so-called “Kulturpark” remained the only theme park of its kind in the GDR. The park's landmark, a widely visible Ferris wheel with a height of 45 meters, was refurbished in 1989. After reunification, the amusement park was completely upgraded to western standards, but higher ticket prices led to a strong drop in visitor traffic. In 2001 the private operator filed for insolvency. More than ten years, the area was was exposed to decay and vandalism.
