Old Town Köpenick

Crime thrillers, castles and an entire neighbourhood to explore

Köpenick is one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the capital - and has not been part of Berlin for very long. Köpenick, which is over 800 years old, was only incorporated in 1920. You probably already know the most famous Köpenicker. The story of the unemployed cobbler who, disguised as a captain, had the mayor arrested and made off with the town's coffers is known far beyond the city limits. But Köpenick has more to offer than just exciting crime stories.

Idyllic island on the edge of Berlin

The confluence of the Dahme and Spree rivers means that Köpenick's medieval old town is located on an island. This gives it a very special charm that you won't find in any other part of Berlin. Even the Hohenzollern dynasty appreciated this when they had their palace built right on the water here in the 17th century.

Intertwined alleyways and an entire district to touch

If you want to get a quick overview of Köpenick's buildings, paths and islands, you should take a look at the district's bronze relief. It was erected in 2009 to mark the 800th anniversary of the town and depicts the entire old town with Schlossinsel and Köpenicker Kiez on a scale of 1:1500. Here you can see the most important sights on a small panel and trace your wanderings through Köpenick with your finger.
