Bauhaus in Berlin always also means before the Bauhaus, which is why the Bröhan Museum in Charlottenburg is a must-see. With its unique collection on Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism as well as important works by Henry van de Velde, Peter Behrens and Alfred Grenander, the museum builds bridges to contemporary art and design.

The Werkbundarchiv - Museum der Dinge is a jewel in the Kreuzberger Oranienstraße. From its self-image as a laboratory and experimental field, the Open Depot focuses on the German Werkbund from the beginning of the 20th century and the "product culture of the 20th and 21st centuries". The original of a "Frankfurt kitchen", the architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, highlights the everyday culture of the 1920s.

The Museum of Decorative Arts not far from Potsdamer Platz is a treasure trove for fans of design. 150 years of fashion history, a design collection that unites Bauhaus classics and contemporary star designers, the chair gallery and the Art Nouveau to Art Deco department with artistic tendencies between the Paris World Exhibition and the 1920s offer an exciting section of international design history.

Shops with Bauhaus Design

At Brandenburgische Straße 17, the chocolate manufacturer Erich Hamann Bittere Schokoladen Berlin invites you not only to the art of chocolate making. The original shop of the Bauhaus teacher Johannes Itten, designed in 1928 in the so-called Bauhaus style, also makes every purchase a double pleasure.

The Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin (KPM) also celebrates Bauhaus 100. On the occasion of its anniversary in 2019, Trude Petri reinterprets Bauhaus classics with the vase series HALLE and the service URBINO. The designs are part of a long tradition. Since 1929, KPM has broken new ground in its designs. Bauhaus student Marguerite Friedlaender is commissioned to design modern tableware. The result: the HALLE'SCHE FORM, which is still available today.

In stilwerk, the department store for design objects that resides near Savignyplatz, a show with 100 design pieces from 1919 to the present takes place from June. Every day, 55 stores ask themselves questions about good design.
