On the 150th birthday of Thomas Mann
The young, delicate wife of a vulgarly coarse, wealthy merchant arrives at the exquisite "Einfried" sanatorium because of a seemingly minor tracheal injury sustained by the birth of her fabulously healthy little son, Anton.
She, Mrs. Klöterjahn, the name of the beautiful young mother, befriends a poet named Detlev Spinell. While the other sanatorium guests go on a sleigh ride, the two remain alone, absorbed in the piano score of Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde."
