The masters of reggae, ska, and rock 'n' roll from New York City are back on tour. The Slackers began in NYC in 1991. Their debut album, Better Late Than Never, was released in 1996. The band's success led to the release of their second album, Red Light, on Epitaph in 1997. Since then, the Slackers have released 11 more studio albums. From then on, their international career has taken off.
The band's musical style is a blend of early Jamaican music, classic American styles of the 1950s and 1960s, influences from 1950s and 1960s rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, and Latin music. Singer Vic Ruggiero coined the term "Jamaican rock 'n' roll" for the band's sound.
THE SLACKERS
Since 1991, the Slackers have released fifteen albums and countless singles, while providing their fans with energetic, ecstatic music at thousands of live performances.
The Slackers have been dubbed "The Sound of New York" by The New York Times. Brooklyn Vegan described them as "a clean blend of ska, reggae, and soul, spiced up by Vic Ruggiero's raspy New York accent."
In April 2022, the Slackers released their new album, "Don't Let The Sunlight Fool Ya" (Pirates Press), which quickly shot to the top of the US Billboard charts. The first time a Slackers album had charted! Ironically, after 30 years as a band, they qualified as "new artists" on Billboard! The Washington Post noted that the Slackers "remain at the top of their game."
The chart-topping "Don't Let the Sunlight Fool Ya" capped a two-year comeback by the Slackers. When COVID-19 halted live shows in 2020, the Slackers switched to livestreams and performed five full-band concerts, broadcast internationally to thousands of viewers. After the streams, they stayed in the studio and recorded the songs that became "Don't Let the Sunlight Fool Ya."
The Slackers capped this comeback with a series of frenetic tours throughout 2022 and 2023, playing everything from clubs to festivals in the US, Canada, Europe, and Brazil. They currently have 90 dates booked for 2024. They are also currently working on a 20th anniversary reissue of their classic album "Close My Eyes" in September and a new single with original music in October.
