The ambiguity of things
On 28 February 2025, the contemporary gallery BETTER GO SOUTH will present the first solo show ‘Post Nut Clarity’ by Dutch artist Onno Meeuwsen at its Berlin location.
The exhibition marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old artist, who graduated in fine arts from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in 2024.
As part of the gallery's artist-in-residence programme, all of the works are created exclusively on site and combine Meeuwsen's eye for composition, his skilled technique and the impressions that shaped him during his stay in the German capital.
In Berlin for the first time, Onno draws inspiration from the vibrant city. His painting currently focuses on still lifes of everyday objects, which are presented in meticulously planned stagings. The creative process does not begin on the canvas, but in the preparation: Meeuwsen arranges food, objects, fabrics and other materials until the desired composition is achieved. He then photographs the arrangement and uses the image as a template for his painting. The work process is structured: He begins with large, powerful brushstrokes for the backgrounds and ends in contrast with detailed and precisely painted objects.
Onno's works of art not only captivate the viewer with their splendour of colour and oversized depiction, but also inspire reflection. The artist combines still life motifs with subtle ambiguity, inspired by his experiences in the LGBTQIA+ scene and the use of dating apps such as Grindr. Whether aubergines, bananas, asparagus or lobster - Onno elevates these objects into a sexualised context without robbing them of their very own identity.
