a tragic farce by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Two shepherds are tending a peacefully grazing flock of sheep. For a change, they suggest a game: "We draw a border and say what is on this side belongs to you and what is here belongs to me. And no one is allowed to go to the other's side." No sooner said than done, and they build a wall. What began as a harmless game leads to a bitter argument.

The gamemaker Cothurnus controls the scene. He intervenes when the shepherds deviate from the given text or want to end the game because they realize: "It's a stupid game. Why are we playing it?"

In addition to the three characters borrowed from Greek mythology, Pierrot and Columbine, two figures from the Commedie dell'arte, are up to mischief. They are not interested in the tragic events next door. It is none of their business. The main thing is that the table is always well-set for them.

By combining two different theater styles, the American poet Millay succeeds in raising a timeless and particularly relevant question today: Who owns the land? And who takes part in what is happening around us?
