Aslan Goisum (*1991 in Grozny, lives in Berlin) works with found or recreated objects, video, works on paper, sculpture and language, achieving a progression of forms that are at the same time abstract and concrete, composed and open-ended. He creates pictorial and architectural spaces that undermine access to understanding.

Goisum's exhibition Suspect at the KINDL is his first institutional solo project in Germany, presenting a new body of work that continues his observation of our attempts at pinning down meaning.

In his work, Goisum draws on formal references from architecture and film art and creates environments and images that subtly hint at the potential of violence. Power and its psychological mechanisms are recurring themes in his interdisciplinary practice. In doing so, he hesitates with regard to the fundamental possibility of communication and understanding and questions the means used to achieve this. Instead, he has developed a grammar of materials and symbols across various groups of works: the heaviness and darkness of steel, close-ups of the human body, views of still landscapes. His precise images and installations are underpinned by models of thought from other epochs and media: literature, poetry, painting, choreography and music.

The works shown at KINDL create an ambivalent environment that keeps the viewer suspended between imagery and intervention. Functional elements borrowed from public space, such as steel doors and a neon sign, remain incomplete in their presence: The neon light remains switched off, the doors are open.

Goisum's formulations are located in negative space. They echo in the dissatisfaction with promises, in the potential of what may not materialise. Language is one of these disappointments, memory is another. Suspect gets rid of any form of curiosity and shows Goisum's search for objects, images and situations that create a meaning beyond the necessity of narratives.
