Two young people, 35 and 26 years old, deal with the subject of death: Mozart after being commissioned to write a requiem by a "grey messenger", which he is said to have referred to himself shortly before his death - and 40 years later, Mendelssohn's sister Fanny Hensel after a devastating cholera epidemic that also claimed the lives of friends and acquaintances of the family.

Both are sacred works, one based on the traditional liturgy of the requiem mass, the other on texts from the Old and New Testaments compiled by the composer herself. Both compositions also clearly refer to Baroque music: Mozart primarily to Handel, Hensel to Bach.

However, while one work in its various versions belongs to the repertoire of choral music, the other is a rarely performed work by a woman who was denied access to the wider musical public during her lifetime.

The Neukölln Chamber Choir will perform both works on November 23rd. at 7:00 p.m. in the church of St. Jacobi, Oranienstr. 132, together with the orchestra Aris et Aulis. Soloists are Christina Germolus, Britta Süberkrüb, Dirk Kleinke and Sebastian Bluth, conducted by Ulrich Miehe.
