film screening followed by audience discussion

Film screening followed by a public discussion on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls.

Little Julia is three years old when her father beats her bloody. That same winter, her mother sends her to a children's home for the first time - to recover, as she says. Julia's parents pretended to love their children, and the children believed them. Neither violence nor neglect were a contradiction for her. But the consequences of what she experienced shape Julia for the rest of her life.

As an adult woman, she returns to her parents' house. She has gone her own way as an actress and activist and now wants to work through her traumatic childhood together with her mother.

She wants to understand: How can you hit someone you love? And how can she make peace with the past without betraying herself? Or how can she free herself from the entanglements and break the pattern?

Julia's very personal film finds impressive answers to questions that go far beyond her own fate.

"Beerhold examines her family structures courageously and closely. Where others might feel anger and sadness, she confronts her family quietly and questioningly. The documentary is not a pure contemporary testimony that can simply be brushed aside with "that's just how it was back then". Instead, the film shows that violence and abuse not only leave traces in children and later adults, but can destroy lives." - Missy Magazine
