Oklou
Oklou was trained in classical
music at a conservatory, but then explored the creative possibilities of
electronic tools on her YouTube channel, which quickly took off. She describes
this step as follows: ‘The first EP served as a transition from my previous
musical background, which was very acoustic and based on live performance, to
an all-electronic and digital form of production. It was one of my first
MIDI compositions.’
In 2015, Oklou moved to Paris, co-founded the female DJ collective TGAF (These
Girls Are on Fiyah), produced, sang, acted – and repeatedly released strong
singles or was a featured guest on music by fellow musicians.
Her debut album, Galore, was released in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, and provided a more
than fitting soundtrack with darkly beautiful, intimate tracks like „god's
chariots“ or „fall and nightime“ . Her new single ‘family and friends’ is out
now, with more singles to follow.
It is a wonderfully otherworldly,
atmospheric, searching song, somewhere between dream-pop and ambient, about
which she says: ‘’family and friends' feels almost like a struggle for me,
searching for answers to unspoken questions and fleeing from something intangible,
invisible. A memory? Maybe I like the idea of running away from something, and
I'm looking for good reasons to run. Maybe I just like it.’
In the coming year, Oklou will now be running towards her next tour, which will
also take her to Berlin for an exclusive show.

Columbia Theater on 27 February.
