The Kommunale Galerie Berlin has an art collection, mainly consisting of graphics, which paint an astonishingly multifaceted picture of a vibrant art metropolis.

Since the art market has only been able to develop to a limited extent since the construction of the Wall, numerous artists found space to live and work here. They shaped West Berlin as a hotspot for unconventional, progressive movements and made it a unique "showcase of the West".
Although not all of the anarchic artistic movements and conceptual new developments of the "front city" are reflected in the purchases of the Kommunale Galerie, an impressive range is evident, ranging from abstraction to concreteness, from pop to agitprop and from proletarian attitudes to social criticism.
The art historian Christoph Tannert, who was born in the GDR, takes a look at this artistic biotope and has put together a selection of works from the 1970s.
This selection illustrates the diversity of artistic approaches in what was then West Berlin and is made tangible in over twenty positions, from Peter Ackermann to Wolf Vostell.
