a photographic declaration of love by Asger Hunov: book premiere

Marzahn is considered the largest housing estate in the GDR and is often spurned by Berliners. But it is no longer a secret that the district has much more to offer than drab prefabricated buildings. This is what brought the Dane Asger Hunov here, who was initially fascinated by the architecture. But he soon realized that the people who live here have much more exciting stories to tell.

That is why the photographer went on site and via social media to look for Marzahn residents who were willing to take part in a photo and interview book about life in Marzahn.

These interviews resulted in over 50 portraits of the residents. This creates a positive and lively picture of the often misunderstood district. In extraordinary photos and short texts, the book reports on a wide variety of people, life and the neighborhood in the district: from a freelance artist to a judo trainer from Ukraine to a long-established pensioner.

“WIR MARZAHNER” will be published as an illustrated book on August 27, 2024.

Asger Hunov is a professional photographer from Denmark. He lives with his family in Copenhagen and works at the local university of applied sciences. For him, Marzahn, with its green spaces, prefabricated buildings and authentic residents, represents a special attraction away from the usual tourist crowds.
