Berlinale Teddy Award Winner

Pedro Lemebel, writer, visual artist and pioneer of the queer movement in Latin America, shook up conservative Chilean society during the Pinochet dictatorship in the 1980s.

Bodies, blood and fire were the protagonists of his work, which he tried to immortalise in a film in the last eight years of his life, which he was never able to complete. In an intimate and poetic journey through his risky performances around homosexuality and human rights, LEMEBEL portrays a culmination of the longing for immortality.

BERLATIN Pride Edition: LEMEBEL [OmeU] Chile, Colombia, 2019, D: Joanna Reposi, 96 min

The Berlinale TEDDY AWARD jury on LEMEBEL: "This film brings to life an artist who survived and resisted the repressive dictatorship and fought for the rights not only of the queer movement, but of all minorities who were attacked and silenced in his country. It highlights the importance of resistance at a time when voices have been silenced around the world. This film is creative in its use of archive footage and the closeness of the director, achieving an intimate portrayal of a person who needs to be recognised by the world.
