»MANHATTAN STORIES« shows everyday life in a New York City where people on the subway don't yet look at their smartphones, but read books. In 1997, Thomas Schadt and Susanne Kammermeier accompany seven friends through "their" city in a calm manner and with an eye for everyday details. Above all, they accompany their protagonists as they confront the anonymity of the metropolis with verve. This makes the film worth watching far beyond its time.

Thomas Schadt is one of Germany's most important documentarians. In 2023, he handed over his production archive to the Deutsche Kinemathek, and his films are available to the public in the Mediathek Fernsehen.
