In the winter of 1891/92, Theodor Fontane suffered a serious health crisis after a bout of influenza, which he described as "my nervous breakdown." His doctor advised him to change manuscripts, which meant putting Effi Briest aside and instead remembering his own childhood. Fontane noted in his diary that he had written himself back to health by writing this book.
