Berlin music theatre combo glanz&krawall

With their new piece, the music theater combo glanz&krawall counters a tradition with a sharp-tongued revenge: For centuries, male theories about "the nature of women" have shaped western art and intellectual history, perpetuating patriarchal power structures, binary gender orders and other nonsense.

The protagonist LULU from Alban Berg's opera fragment and Frank Wedekind's dramas Erdgeist and Die Büchse der Pandora - originally introduced as a dangerous snake by the animal tamer - takes over the ring and stages her grotesque, anti-patriarchal circus show. Here, twelve-tone music merges with electro-punk, popcorn with high culture, and opera with circus: LULU: Revenge in the Big Top turns the male fantasies of the originals on their head and reveals the socially critical aspects of Wedekind's Lulu dramas - the rigid and violent behavior of the male characters.

The intervention commando, consisting of actress Lisa Heinrici, soprano Marieke Wikesjo and musician Nolundi Tschudi, expands the expressive possibilities of musical theater through circus elements. They create a stage on which unsung stories, hidden connections and unconscious symbolisms are expressed, for which traditional theater and opera forms do not offer any tools.

Surrounded by synthesizers, bass guitars and drum machines, the women's trio forms a synthesis of opera, spoken theater and electro-punk. They weave motifs and fragments from Berg and Wedekind, silent film pope Pabst to the Lulu album by Lou Reed and Metallica into an unrestrained performance in September 2024. Against the romanticized death, the eternal femme fatale clichés and the limitations of a male-dominated (art) world.
