Immersive performance by Myriam Van Imschoot & Lucas van Haesbroeck

In “Nocturnes for a Society” the audience is invited to weave a nocturnal sound carpet, a blanket under which one can slip and sink into an extraordinary sleep while the sounds of the city can be heard in the background.

The performance “Nocturnes for a society” by Myriam Van Imschoot and Lucas van Haesbroeck, which envelops the audience in a poetic soundscape over a summer night, marks the start of the new program series “Conjunctions - Acts of being in relation” in the Radialsystem, which is dedicated to the poetry of “being in relationship”.

The immersive sound experience of the “Nocturnes” extends throughout the night into the early hours:

The audience is an active part of an environment that resembles an oasis of light, shadows, sounds, fabrics and dreams, creating space for associations and an individual and shared world of experience.

Sound artist Myriam Van Imschoot and set designer Lucas van Haesbroeck draw on the legacy of American composer and sound activist Pauline Oliveros and on numerous traditions of collective “sounding” that people have used since time immemorial to relate to one another.

The audience plays an indispensable role in this. They interact with each other, with objects and with the space, according to a score that freely and almost casually creates unexpected textures and atmospheres.

The collectively created soundtrack becomes a soundscape for a deep sleep: T

he Nocturne leads a life of its own and slumbers through the night in its various stages and cycles of rest.

The performances are preceded by two “embodied practices” that focus on the making of felt as a shared practice and the voice as a medium for community building.

With the two exchange formats, the Radialsystem is continuing the series of “Embodied Practices”, in which forms of preserving and passing on body practices from different cultural contexts are tested together.
