Expert tour with park district manager Anne-Grit Reichelt, SPSG

Climate change has changed Babelsberg Park significantly over the last seven years. Woody plants in particular have become victims of their environmental conditions. However, trees form the spatial composition of a garden work of art and are staged in Babelsberg Park as a frame for views of Potsdam's cultural landscape.

What challenges does the garden team face and what is being done to restore the historical appearance of the garden monument, Park Babelsberg, under these difficult conditions and preserve it for the next generation?

Water is available on only 15 percent of the park area. The attempts that have been tried to successfully establish replacement trees, how the water-bound paths can withstand long periods of heat and heavy rain, and the complex topic of humus enrichment in sandy soil are presented in the tour.

In formerly forest-like structures that have completely collapsed, the garden team is fighting with plants that are winners of climate change and are establishing themselves much more quickly than natural regeneration or planting.
