Kloster Lehnin

Historically significant buildings in a gentle nature

The early Gothic Kloster Lehnin, a former Cistercian abbey, and its church dedicated to St Mary are probably the most well-known buildings in the municipality of Kloster Lehnin [southwest of Potsdam created in 2002 from the merger of fourteen villages]. The monastery grounds with their thick, cool walls bear witness to centuries of history presented in a museum on-site. The municipality, however, has much more to offer: many old buildings and several protected areas home to rare species of animal and plant species. The idyllic, rather flat landscape contains several small lakes and ponds. Walking, hiking and biking trails run along the meadows, pastures and forests.

Bathing and a great Pumpkin Festival

The Havel and Plane rivers also pass through the area and continue to power some of the mills in the villages. Swimming is allowed in most of the municipality’s natural lakes; there’s even a nudist beach available. Each year on the last weekend of September, Lehnin hosts the Internationales Kürbisfest, a harvest festival celebrating everything there is to celebrate about the pumpkin.
