Guided tour of garden culture and ideas about nature with Rudolf G. Scharmann

The Glienicke country estate was redesigned in the 1820s in the style of ancient Italian villas. During the tour through the garden courtyard, the “pleasure ground” and the living spaces, it becomes clear how masterfully nature and life intertwine here. An arcade decorated with flower tendrils connects the courtyard and the castle. Numerous views of the garden and lifelike depictions of flowers on porcelain express the longing for a domestic idyll - in a time of emerging urbanization and industrialization.

The guided tour series “Garten(t)räume” deals with garden designs, floral decorations and plant motifs in three different castles and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries and places them in the context of the underlying ideas about nature. The effects of climatic changes and the history of individual plant species are also discussed.

Rudolf G. Scharmann is the former head of the Charlottenburg Palace area and author of the book “Of Garden Dreams and Rose Empresses. Flower art and plant symbolism in Prussian castles”.
