Go back to where it all began

The origins of the global modern LGBTQIA+ identity movement lie in Berlin.

Reconnect with your story

Beaten to death. Silenced to death. Queer and trans stories are often ignored and deliberately forgotten for one reason: people who don't know their story are more easily discriminated against. Break the cycle of ignorance and learn more about the history of this movement!

Discover “the world’s first gay man”

Discover the life of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, how he developed the world's first queer and trans identities and how he fought against the criminalization of homosexuality. Understand how this laid the foundation for a global movement.

Discover the world's first trans identity and gender confirmation surgeries

Find out who coined the terms “transvestite” and “transsexualism”. Discover so-called “transvestite certificates” and the story of Lili Elbe, Dora Richter and Karl M. Baer, the first transsexuals in the world to undergo gender confirmation surgeries.

Learn more about the science behind intersex and non-binary

Learn about sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld's "sex broker" theory and why the world would think about gender and non-binary identities very differently today if the Nazis hadn't destroyed this fledgling movement.

Understand the impact of 1920s Berlin lesbian life on the world

Discover the vibrant lesbian life in the Roaring Twenties and how Marlene Dietrich made her fashion style internationally popular. Get to know Germany's most famous lesbian singer Claire Waldoff and the story of the bisexual black dancer Josephine Baker.

Find out what happened in Nazi Germany

Hitler's conflicted relationship with homosexuality, openly gay Nazis and what happened to LGBTQIA+ people in Nazi concentration camps.

Embrace the trauma of the AIDS crisis

Understand why an entire generation of gay and bisexual men was traumatized by the AIDS crisis, how West Berlin nightclub SchwuZ became a center of activism, and why the Berlin Wall was dubbed the GDR's condom.

Discover how Berlin's LGBTQIA+ community has shaped the city's world-famous nightlife

From the trans community’s “Chez Romy Haag” and its revolution in nightlife to the gay community in Metropol; From Gayhane at SO36 to Berghain's rise to fame as the world's most famous club, get an idea of the influence of the queer and trans community on Berlin's internationally acclaimed nightlife - and find out where the best places to go out in Berlin are today.

Join a tour guide as a queer activist, certified social scientist and sex educator

Jeff studied sociology and gender studies and focused on sexuality and queer theory. He is also a certified sex educator and freelance journalist specializing in queer life in Berlin, as well as a long-time LGBTQIA+ activist.

Enjoy a fun day with augmented reality

This tour is enhanced with augmented reality elements. Through your guide's iPad camera, you'll see the world in front of you with augmented reality elements on top. For example, you can demonstrate together with queer activists from the past. Or you can see the building in front of you as it looked 100 years ago. You can also take photos of yourself with the augmented reality elements as a souvenir of the tour.
