THF Tower Flughafen Tempelhof in Berlin

From an air traffic control tower to an excursion highlight for everyone

At the western head building of the airport stands the former air traffic control tower, in short the THF Tower. Fully renovated and completely barrier-free, it opened to the public in July 2023. 
It is the first completed part of the large, former airport buildings, which are going to be gradually redesigned in the next few years and will be made available to the public as spaces for exhibitions, creative enterprises and major events.

Under the motto Your piece of Berlin sky, Big Box, Deck 360° and the glazed tower dome welcome you to the future:
Take the newly restored and structurally renewed, historic staircase, which seem so airy as to appear to be floating on the old walls, and reach the Big Box on the sixth level, a spacious place for exhibitions and events. The picture exhibition Horizonte is currently on display. Flughafen Tempelhof 1990-2022. Here you can learn about the important facts on the concept of redesigning the former airport site. This place is going to host curated exhibitions continuously in the coming years.
 

A broad expanse of the Berlin sky spreads out above you as soon as you enter Deck 360°. You settle yourself down in one of the several comfortable seats on the large, wooden roof terrace, relax and enjoy the panoramic view over the Tempelhofer Feld and the surrounding districts.

Media stations visualise the sites that stretch out before you and regale you with the historical past. The old, glazed tower dome is right behind you.

Did you know that the former Tempelhof Airport with its special elongated architecture can still be recognised from space?

It will celebrate its 100the anniversary in October 2023: 
After a vibrant history and the dark years spent under Nazi rule, Tempelhof was Germany’s largest airport for a few years after the second world war and was West Berlin‘s gateway to the world in divided Germany. But the former hub of international air traffic has fallen silent since it was shut down in 2008.  The majestic halls have been increasingly used for trade fairs and other major events in recent years. During this time, the airport field, the Tempelhofer Feld, remained undeveloped and has become a huge recreation ground in the middle of the city.

But now the old airport has really come back to life. The Opening of the THF Tower in July is the first milestone:
The next few years will witness the site gradually becoming a place for meetings and interactions for Berliners, for international guests and for all those interested. A city in a City, so to say – with a variety of cultural offerings and art exhibitions. The Tempelhof airport is also going to become another location for creative enterprises and major events in Berlin.

In the meantime, cultural life is also picking up speed on the Tempelhofer Feld: a new open-air stage, the Luftschloss Tempelhofer Feld, invites visitors during the summer months to watch as well as participate: The wooden amphitheatre offers a varied programme for the whole family and can also accommodate up to 400 visitors.

The Tower can be easily reached by public transport: Take the U6 underground line and get off at Paradestraße station.
