During the Long Night of Museums, the Humboldt Forum invites you on an individual journey through space and time with atmospheric lighting, an open-air short film program and a DJ set.

This year, the Humboldt Forum is part of Berlin's Long Night of Museums. The Humboldt Forum is looking forward to your visit from 6 pm.
After dusk, you will enter the Schlüterhof through portals illuminated in rainbow colors, which this year invites you to linger with a short film program. You will be able to see a light concert that shoots its rays far into the Berlin night sky from afar.

On this long night, the air-conditioned foyer invites you to dance or chill out to the rhythms of DJ Ben Olayinka. Enjoy a digital sea of color that our cosmographer will play for you.

Get to know the entire house in one long night: All four venues will open their doors to you.

At the Humboldt Forum, you can expect a program from the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace, the National Museums in Berlin with the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art as well as the Stadtmuseum Berlin and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. During the Long Night of Museums, connect with the globe in BERLIN GLOBAL on an interactive tour and experience how the city and its people are connected to the world - then and now. Or find answers to the question of how climate change, species extinction and the crisis of democracy are connected in the Humboldt Lab's exhibition After Nature. The exhibitions of the Ethnologisches Museum and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin) offer very different views of past and present cultures in Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Banu - Afghan women show their weaving work

After the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August 2021, some of the former employees of organizations working in Afghanistan came to Germany with their families, and women from Afghanistan founded a group in Bautzen: BANU - the name they gave themselves. Translated, it means “lady - a woman who can do everything”. The women master various traditional textile crafts: they embroider, sew, work with wool and weave. Together with the initiator of the group and with the support of master craftsmen from Upper Lusatia, the group built a traditional weaving device, as it is still used by women in Afghanistan today, and the search for a model that could help build this device in Bautzen brought the group into contact with the Ethnological Museum Berlin, which houses a large collection of Afghan weavings.

Secrets - short film program

Secrets belong to film like darkness belongs to the movie theater: they can be discovered in the stories on the screen, in images, sounds, gestures, looks, landscapes. In keeping with this year's motto, we are showing a program of current, very different short films from six countries during the Long Night of Museums. The Witness Tree (Niranjan Raj Bhetwal) from Nepal is about a family secret, while in Printed Rainbow (Gitanjali Rao) an elderly woman from India provides insights into the secrets of her matchboxes. In Pássaro Memória (Leonardo Martinelli) from Brazil, a mysterious bird takes flight, and in Slow Shift (Shambhavi Kaul) langurs animate the mystical temples of Hampi. The Nigerian film Rehearsal (Michael Omonua) is about bizarre religious secrets and the comedy A Guide to Dining out in Nairobi (Hugh Mitton), which reveals a lucrative business secret, is set in Kenya. The films can be seen continuously from 9 pm to 2 am in the Schlüterhof.

It lies in public spaces - Performance tour through the African collections

Performance artist David Dibiah questions the African collections and their presentation in the newly opened Ethnologisches Museum. What lies in public spaces and display cases like these? What truths need to be uncovered? What lies still exist today? In alternating rhythms consisting of rap, prayers, commemorative exclamations, melodies and poetic declamations, a protest sound is created together with the audience that pursues and demands interpretative sovereignty: No object without permission!

The performance gives visitors a new perspective on object histories and their existence and appeals to them emotionally. Instead of the greed for knowledge and the collecting mania that characterized colonial collectors, it is about sharpening compassion and wisdom.
